Nezumi Shino Chawan

Nezumi Shino is a distinctive type of Shino ware, known for its soft grey tones and the bold contrast between dark and light.

Its patterns are not simply painted on. They are made with a traditional scraping technique called kakiotoshi: the surface is coated with an iron-rich slip, parts of which are carefully scraped away to reveal the design before the piece is covered with Shino glaze and fired.

The firing turns the iron-rich surface a characteristic smoky grey, while the scraped areas come out lighter, creating a natural contrast.

Earthy, expressive and slightly mysterious, Nezumi Shino is a beautiful combination of craftsmanship, fire and chance.

This is a vintage chawan and it may have been used before.
