Hagi-Yaki Chawan
Hagi ware is a traditional style of Japanese ceramics with a history of more than 400 years, deeply connected to the culture of the Japanese tea ceremony.
Unlike highly decorated ceramics, Hagi ware is admired for its simplicity, soft earthy tones and warm, organic textures. Its slightly irregular forms and subtle imperfections embody the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: finding beauty in simplicity, in imperfection and in the natural passage of time.
One of its most fascinating characteristics is how it changes through use. The porous clay and the fine crazing in the glaze gradually absorb tea, slowly altering the colour and character of the surface. This transformation is known as “Hagi no nanabake”, the seven transformations of Hagi.
Rather than remaining unchanged, Hagi ware grows together with its owner, becoming more personal and more beautiful with age.
This is a vintage chawan and it may have been used before.
