Shino-Yaki Chawan
Shino ware is one of Japan’s most distinctive traditional ceramics, developed in the Mino region during the late 16th century and closely connected to the culture of the Japanese tea ceremony.
It is best known for its thick, milky white glaze, its soft texture and the subtle shades of warm white, orange and red created naturally by the firing. Beneath the glaze, simple iron-painted designs often appear slightly blurred, giving each piece a quiet, almost dreamlike character.
Much of the beauty of Shino lies in its unpredictability. Clay, glaze, fire and ash interact in ways that can never be fully controlled, so no two pieces are alike.
Rustic yet expressive, Shino ware celebrates imperfection and the beauty of chance. It is a quiet reminder that the most beautiful things are often born when we let nature take part in the making.
This is a vintage chawan and it may have been used before.
